Devotion for October 2024: God is in Control
Election years can be arduous. They are filled with tension, strife, and division. As we get closer to November, we become further divided as a nation, and the effects on our mental and spiritual health are terrible. How did we get here? What is causing all this chaos?
We must understand that America is of this world. America is temporary, if not an instant, in the eyes of God. In a time when people have fewer things to be anxious about, it seems like they have more anxiety and worries than ever! This upcoming election is at the center of our attention, and for most it will cause anxiety and dread.
‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’
Philippians 4:6-7 ESV
I want to let the context of these verses sink in. Paul wrote them in a jail cell where he was imprisoned for his faith. He had more things to be anxious about than most of us do today. Anxiety and worry achieve nothing. We should turn to the Lord to take away our worries as we choose to fear, love, and trust Him in all things. “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” [1 John 4:18 ESV]
I remind you that God is still in control. “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” [Colossians 1:16 ESV] God will always be in charge, both when life is good, and even more so when life is difficult.
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33 NIV] Not only is God in control of what happens in our country and what happens during our election, but He is in control of everything that happens throughout the world. Whichever fallible, sinful human being is elected as the president this November, Christ will forever be king.
Many Blessings,
